Leaves are falling, mornings are cooler, and it can be tempting to put fall property clean-up off and leave the lawn and garden alone until spring. But what happens before the ground freezes can make a significant difference in how your property comes out of winter. A proper fall clean-up isn't just about looking tidy. It protects everything you've invested in all season long.     ### **What Winter Does to an Unprepared Property** The biggest winter threat to your lawn usually isn't the cold. It's what's left sitting on it. Fall conditions can vary across Southern Ontario, but freeze-thaw cycles, snow cover, and changing temperatures all put added stress on a property. Leaves and debris left in place can become a wet, heavy layer that blocks light and air for months. That’s where many spring lawn problems can start.   ### **Leaf Removal: Timing Matters** A few scattered leaves won't hurt your lawn. A thick, matted layer will, smothering the grass and trapping moisture at its base. Rather than waiting until every tree is bare: - Clear leaves regularly as they fall - Mulch light leaf cover with your mower to return nutrients to the soil - Remove heavy buildup along fence lines, beds, and shaded areas - Plan a final clean-up once most trees have dropped, usually late October to mid-November Don't forget hard surfaces. Wet leaves on walkways and patios get slippery, and as they break down they can stain pavers and concrete, leaving marks that are tough to remove. Leaves in drains and eavestroughs can also lead to pooling and ice. ### **Preventing Snow Mold** Circular, matted patches of grey or pink grass as the snow melts may be snow mold, one of the most common lawn diseases in Ontario. It thrives in cool, wet conditions, especially when leaves, debris, or long grass trap moisture against the lawn. The good news is that it's largely preventable in fall: - Remove leaves and debris so nothing traps moisture against the grass - Lower your final mow gradually to about 2.5 inches so grass doesn't mat down under snow - Avoid heavy late-season fertilizing, which pushes soft growth right before winter ### **Aeration: A Head Start on Spring** After a summer of heat, foot traffic, and mowing, soil can become compacted. Core aeration opens it back up so water, air, and nutrients can reach the roots. Done in fall, aeration can improve drainage before winter moisture arrives and give your lawn a better start when spring returns. A complete fall clean-up typically includes: - Cutting back spent perennials and clearing plant debris - Wrapping vulnerable shrubs against wind, salt, and snow load - Topping up mulch to insulate roots through freeze-thaw cycles - Final edging so beds come back crisp in spring Some perennials and ornamental grasses can be left standing for winter interest and pollinators.
